Personal Statement
What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
One good skill I have is just being a good listener. I'm a really good at just talking to my close friends and listening to what they have to say about problems. This skill is meaningful to me because I'm able to help some of my close cousins when they a problem. And its not that I give out good advice. I guess just listening to them. I think I'd be a great counselor.
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
One significant challenge I've faced was during my sophomore year. I fractured my knee and I just wanted to stay home and do nothing. I felt terrible at the time. I would go out to play soccer after school and now I couldn't. The doctor said I would have the cast on for a month and a half or two full months. I missed a week of school. I knew I was getting behind in all my classes. So I was like no I can't let this stop me from attending so for 2 months I was walking around campus on crutches. This affected me because I didn't want to go through again so I've never played a sport for the high school again. I do play outside a little bit but I stopped for a long time.
Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
A experience I had where I influenced others has to be when I coached a youth soccer team. I thought to myself it'll be easy. I quickly learned that it wasn't true. I developed patience with the kids. Also that you have to be strict at some points. I noticed that I positively influenced them, when we started the season the kids had little self confidence. I noticed at the end of the season the kids were confident and had a blast during there games.
Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
I have to say my favorite subject is Spanish. I took Spanish my junior year and I LOVED IT. I already knew how to write and read in Spanish. I learned a lot more than I thought I would. Not really in spelling but in grammar. I'm enjoying this class because its fun and will help me in the future when I try to get a job I can put in the job application I'm bilingual. Having this class for 2 years made me proud knowing I can speak more than one language.
